What happened to Omegle

Omegle closed on 8 November 2023, after fourteen years. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, wrote that running it had become "no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically", and it shut down while facing litigation over how the site had been misused, including a case brought by a woman who said it had paired her with an adult man when she was a child.

Nothing replaced it directly. The people who used it for random video chat scattered across a dozen smaller sites, which is probably how you got here: you went looking for the thing Omegle did and found it gone.

How this differs from Omegle

The first honest answer is that this one is still running.

The real difference is moderation. Omegle closed in large part because fighting misuse had outgrown what one person could carry. This site has moderators in the rooms, a reporting route from inside the chat, an 18+ policy that is enforced rather than merely stated, and permanent bans for anything involving a minor. That does not make random chat risk-free, because no random chat is, but it is the difference between a service with somebody watching and one without.

The second difference is what happens when pairing is slow. Omegle was random or nothing. Here, if connect keeps turning up quiet matches, the group rooms are one tap away with people already talking in them, so a quiet hour does not end the visit.

A different application to the rest of the site

Roulette does not run on the same software as the group rooms. It is a separate, mobile-first application built around one-to-one video, so the layout and the controls are its own. Do not expect the room list, the nickname colours or the private-window behaviour you get elsewhere on the site.

That also means it has its own connection state: you are not "in" a room here, you are either connected to somebody or waiting to be.

Allow camera and microphone first

This is the single most common reason roulette appears broken. Browsers block camera and microphone access by default, so the first time you press connect you will get a permission prompt. That comes from your browser, not from us. Decline it and you will connect to people without being able to see or hear them.

If you dismissed the prompt by accident, click the padlock in the address bar and re-enable camera and microphone for the site, then reload.

How pairing works

You are matched with whoever is free at that moment. Filters narrow the pool by gender and region. The tighter the filter, the longer the wait, so start broad if it is quiet.

Skipping is instant and costs nothing. Nobody is told why you moved on, and you will not be paired with the same person again straight away.

Staying safe on random chat

Random pairing means no reputation to go on, so be more careful than you would be in a room you know. Never send money, never install anything a stranger sends you, and keep personal details back until you have reason to trust someone.
