The Man I Met At Nimtala

The night I met him, the wind over Nimtala Ghat
felt colder than usual.

The Hoogly River moved slowly under the dim lights, dark and endless like it was hiding secrets the city had forgotten. Most people avoided this place after sunset. But I had always been drawn to quiet places… places where the noise of Kolkata faded into whispers.
That night, the ghats were nearly empty.
Except for him.
He stood near the edge of the steps, his black shirt moving slightly in the wind, gaze fixed on the river as if it belonged to him. There was something unsettling about the calm way he stood there too still, too confident for a man alone in a place like this.
I should have left.
But instead, I stayed.
Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe something else.

When he finally turned toward me, his eyes were darker than the river behind him. Not angry, not cruel just intense in a way that made my heartbeat stumble.
“You’re not afraid to be here alone?” he asked.
His voice was low, smooth… dangerous.
I shrugged, pretending my pulse hadn’t quickened.
“Should I be?”
For a moment he didn’t answer. He simply looked at me like he was trying to read something hidden beneath my skin.
Then he smiled.
“Most people would run.”
“And you?” I asked quietly.
“I don’t run.”
The wind carried the scent of smoke and river water through the night. Somewhere in the distance a bell rang softly.
He walked closer, each step unhurried, confident… until he stopped right in front of me. Close enough that I could feel the warmth of him despite the cold air.

“You shouldn’t trust strangers,” he murmured.
I tilted my head slightly.
“Who said I trust you?”
Something flickered in his expression …amusement, maybe.
For a long moment we stood there like that, the silence thick between us. The river kept flowing, indifferent to the tension building on the stone steps.
Then suddenly he reached out.
Not roughly.
Just enough to tuck a loose strand of my hair behind my ear.
The touch was brief, but it sent a strange warmth down my spine.
“You’re brave,” he said softly. “Or reckless.”
“Maybe both.”
He laughed quietly at that.
And for the first time, the darkness around us didn’t feel threatening anymore.
It felt intimate.
As if the night itself had pulled us together in a place where the world usually spoke only of endings.
His hand lingered near mine for a moment before slowly intertwining our fingers.
“Tell me something,” he whispered.

“What?”
“If we meet here again tomorrow… will you come?”
The river shimmered under the dim lights.
I should have said no.
Instead, I squeezed his hand slightly.
“Maybe,” I said…….
