Does Comparison become a Shield..?

There is a quiet habit many of us fall into without even realizing it.
When confronted with our own mistakes.. instead of pausing to reflect, we sometimes search for someone else's fault, especially one that appears bigger.

It is like drawing a longer line beside our own, hoping that ours will suddenly seem smaller..
The mistake itself hasn't changed...
but our perspective has..!

Perhaps it is our way of protecting our pride. Perhaps admitting we were wrong feels heavier than pointing out that someone else did the same—or even worse..!

In those moments...

Comparison becomes a shield..!

not because it heals the truth..
but because it softens the discomfort of facing it..!

But does another person's mistake really make ours any less meaningful?
If someone else chooses the wrong path, does it somehow make or justify ours the right one?

Not really...

Wrong does not become right simply because someone else's wrong appears greater...!!!

When we constantly compare our flaws with those of others, we may win an argument, protect our image, or convince a few people...

Yet, deep within ourselves, we still know the truth. Conscience has a quiet voice that comparisons can never silence..!

True character is revealed not when we successfully defend our mistakes...
but..
when we acknowledge them without needing anyone else's failure as an excuse..!

It takes strength to say,.."Yes, I was wrong," without adding, "But they were worse."

The world often rewards those who justify themselves.
Life..however, quietly respects those who take responsibility.

Owning our mistakes may bruise the ego for a moment..
but it strengthens the soul for a lifetime..!!!

Instead of drawing a bigger line beside someone else's, perhaps we should learn to erase our own where we can, correct it where we cannot, and grow from it..!

Because real integrity is never measured by how small our mistakes look beside another person's...

It is measured by the courage to face them without comparison..!

Another's mistake never rewrites our own.The moment we stop comparing is the moment we start growing✨✨

I have witnessed this firsthand.

I believe that one reaction can trigger another, and that once a conflict continues, it can involve two people—even if only one person was responsible for starting it.

There is an important difference between who started the conflict and who is responsible for what happens next.

Sometimes, one person genuinely begins by being cruel. They manipulate, emotionally insult, expose personal information, or deliberately hurt someone.

Then the person who has been hurt begins to think:

“They started it.”
“They hurt me first.”
“If they can insult me, why should I hold back?”

“If they can use my personal information against me, why can’t I do the same?”

And this is where the cycle begins.

I have seen this happen in chatrooms, where emotional abuse and verbal abuse can feed into one another. Someone may emotionally manipulate or psychologically attack another person. The victim, consumed by anger, retaliates with verbal abuse—sometimes using deeply personal insults involving their mother, father, family, or other sensitive areas.

And they believe their actions are justified because:

“He started it.”

But anger does not remain anger forever.

Sometimes, it turns into revenge.

Revenge turns into cruelty.

And eventually, the person who was initially reacting to abuse can become an abuser themselves—sometimes going further and causing even greater harm than the person they originally condemned.

Yet they continue to defend themselves with the same sentence:

“But he started it.”

Maybe he did.

But the person who started the fire is not the only one responsible for choosing to pour petrol on it.

The first wrong may explain your anger.

It may explain your pain.

It may explain why you reacted.

But it does not automatically justify everything you choose to do afterward.

Being hurt first does not give us unlimited permission to hurt others. Being provoked does not make every response acceptable. And someone else’s decision to abandon their morality does not require us to abandon ours.

At some point, the question stops being:

“Who started it?”

And becomes:

“Who chose to continue it?”

Because there is a moment in every conflict when we stop merely reacting and begin making our own choices.

And that is the moment when responsibility begins.

You can be the person who was hurt first and still be wrong for what you do next.

You can be justified in your anger and still be responsible for your actions.

You can be right about someone else’s cruelty and still become cruel yourself.

The most dangerous justification is:

“They made me do it.”

Because people may influence our emotions, provoke our anger, and cause us pain—but they do not have the final authority over who we choose to become.

At some point, we have to stop asking who threw the first stone and start asking who we are becoming by continuing to throw them.

Because if someone else’s wrongdoing becomes the reason we abandon our own values, then they have not only hurt us.

They have changed us.

And the greatest victory is not proving that you can hurt someone just as deeply as they hurt you.

It is refusing to let their cruelty turn you into someone you never wanted to become❤️
