The Odyssey: Chapter 3

The Atlantean

Epic Legend
Odysseus and his men talked to Circe about their journey as she walked across the room to get some food , suddenly Odysseus heard a noise outside and went to look. A few moments later as Odysseus was walking amongst the trees a man appeared beside him , "I am the god Hermes" he said , "what are you doing here?" Asked Odysseus as he raised an eyebrow and ran his fingers through his hair , "I came here to warn you about Circe" said Hermes.

"Hmm I knew something strange was going on when those wolves and lions were acting like puppies and kittens" said Odysseus , "Circe's food is enchanted , it makes people turn into animals" said Hermes. Odysseus suddenly looked worried , "my men!" Said Odysseus , Hermes handed Odysseus a special plant , "eat this plant , it will protect you from her magic" said Hermes , Odysseus took the plant and ate it as Hermes vanished in front of his eyes.

Moments later he had finished eating the plant and went back inside Circe's home , as he walked inside her home he saw a few pigs laying around the room. "Where are my men?" Said Odysseus , "oh they're around here somewhere..." Said Circe as she ate some olives , Odysseus looked at the pigs knowing that Circe had transformed his men into them , "here have some fruit" said Circe as she picked up the bowl of fruit , Odysseus grabbed an apple and began to eat it , a few minutes later he had finished the apple , "that tasted good" said Odysseus.

Circe sat there with a look of surprise on her face and said "what..why haven't you turned into an animal" , "that's my business , now turn those pigs back into my men" said Odysseus. Circe sighed and said "no one has ever been able to cheat my magic" , Circe reluctantly reversed her magic and the pigs turned back into men , Circe asked Odysseus and his men if they would like to stay with her , they talked and a few moments they agreed.

Odysseus and his men spent a year staying with Circe but then his men became restless and wanted to leave , Circe sighed and said "very well , continue your journey". Odysseus and his men prepared to leave her island and headed outside , "if you want to get home you'll need to sail to the land of the dead and seek help from Tiresias" said Circe , "how do we get to the land of the dead and not die?" said Odysseus , Circe gave him a list of instructions to follow and warned him of the dangers that lay ahead.

"Let the northern winds carry you there" said Circe , Odysseus and his men boarded their ship and sailed onwards towards the land of the dead , eventually the north winds carried them towards the land of the dead. They anchored their ship by the misty shore and walked onto the island , they headed towards the sacred orchard where dark trees grew , Odysseus read the instructions that Circe had given him , he dug a small hole and poured some fresh sheeps blood into it.

The blood was poured into the hole to tempt the spirits of the dead to come out of the shadows and talk to him , shadowy spirits started to appear in front of him. Odysseus's men stepped backwards a little further behind him in fear , "Tiresias come toward me" said Odysseus , one of the shadows spirits came toward him , "I want to talk to you" said Odysseus , the shadowy spirit kneeled down and drank the blood from the hole in the ground , the shadowy spirit became more solid , he looked very very old.

Tiresias said "you're in trouble , Poseidon is very angry and wants you dead because you blinded his Cyclops son Polyphemus , one more warning... Whatever you do , do not touch Helios's cattle , if you eat them Helios will..." , Tiresias went silent and shook his head , "remember don't touch the cattle" said Tiresias as he faded away , Odysseus and his crew boarded their ship feeling chilled after hearing those warnings from Tiresias and then sailed onwards away from the land of the dead...
