Chapter 33: Floresith
For several months now Nekonata, and his companions travelled by foot, Santaya and Kristolia had grown and become worthy friends. Helping to find and scavenge food for them all to eat. How he knew how to skin and debone animals he did not know, why he kept saying random words in another language he did not know. Had he noticed the large raven following him, yes of course he had, but he wasn’t bothered.
“I think it’s time for us to rest, we’ll go in here in this small hollow.”
The raven perched on a high tree branch looked down, its eyes blinking. Suddenly squawked loudly, “Not here, not safe!” It was too late, a large brown bear came out of the hollow sniffing the air curiously, it turned slowly, eyes locking on to the wolves.
“Girls get behind me!” Neko stepped forward, the brown stood on its back legs howling wildly, claiming its territory, “No, no, we mean no harm… it’s ok, we’ll leave.” Neko raised his arms and slowly stepped backwards, the raven watching high up curiously. The bear dropped onto all fours and charged, shoulder barging a tree out of the way in the process, but the boy was ready this time, reckless but ready, he notched an arrow in his bow, and waited, the bear now in front of roared loudly, but Neko calmly shot an arrow straight through its mouth, it piercing into to its brain, the bear crashed to the floor, dead.
“Why can’t all animals just listen?” Neko mutters as he retrieves his arrow. The girls walked up to the bear and sniffed it, before turning their noses and walking away.
“Listen, Loki does…” Squawked the raven. “Bear pelt good, sell good”
“Oh, so now you talk… For months you follow and act all ignorant!” Nekonata kneels down, and starts his slow painstaking process of carefully skinning the bear. Several hours later he’s ready, tying up the bear pelt he slings it over his shoulder and starts walking again. “No rest for the wicked hey girls?” The wolves just look up at him curiously.
A few days later they come up to the portside town, Colkeeth. Slowly walking through the wolves stay right by his side and watch what's happening around them carefully, Loki flies up and lands on a building trestle.
Neko walks up to a trader, and asks if they buy bear pelt. “Bear pelt, yes we buy. If could quality we would give good gold.”
Neko drops the pelt in front of the trader, who’s eyes go wide. “You have killed the bear King Tutti?” The trader asks.
“Who?” Nekonata looks confused, then the trader pulls a poster of the wall and hands it to him “The brown bear King Tutti needs to be dealt with, 100 gold crowns to ever defeat it.” Neko looks up. “Who do I claim this from?”
“You claim it from Dornie Colm, over there.” The trader nods in the direction of a small restaurant.
Neko walks in and glances around, drops the pelt in the middle of the floor. “Dornie Colm, I have something for you to see” *I call out confidently.
A few moments later a stocky dwarf walks forward, black hair, deep set blue eyes, a bushy unkempt braided beard. “Well look what we’ve got here, I’ll be damned” The dwarf slapped his on his leg. “The pelt of ol’ King Tutti!” *A small crowd gathered in amazement to see. “Here you go, 100 gold crowns as promised… now you can sell the pelt”
“Thank you.” Replied with a bow of respect as he pocketed his gold. The dwarf looked at him curiously, but reciprocated with a small bow of his own.
The boy walked back out to the trader, and managed to sell the bear pelt for 130 gold crowns. With the wolves at his heels, many people moved out of his way as he walked through Colkeeth exiting at the opposite end. The raven flew on to a branch waiting for them to catch up, “This way, this way!” He squawked, hopping from branch to branch deeper into another forest.
“What’s the worst thing that could happen?” He said to Santi and Kristi shrugging his shoulders. He followed the raven, walking through the forest felt like a lifetime. Everything looked the same; they walked and rested, but slept little. Neko lost track of how many days they’d been in the forest.
The wolves suddenly perked up as the noticed light started to filter through the canopy of the trees. Nekonata ran forward, more daylight started to come through, they came to the edge of the forest and were momentarily blinded by the bright light of day. As his eyes adjusted, he saw…
Fields of amber, purple and blue stretched out to the east for as far as the eyes could see. To the north, south and west were the forests that led to the distant lands, if one could find their way through it. “Floresith, many years since here, I have been…” Loki squawked quietly as he landed on Neko’s shoulder.
“What do you mean many years? Who are you?”
“Loki, just Loki!” The raven said as he flew ahead.
