Chapter 31: Distance
Nekonata, ran and stumbled, and ran some more, he was scared, and skittish. He kept to the trees, staying off the road. His bow behind his back, and his sword at his waist. He didn’t know where he was going, he had no idea. There were so many sounds that he didn’t recognise. All these weird tweets, and hoots, and shuffles and scuffles, a hiss here and there. A loud growl coming from further in trees. Snarls, and snaps, followed by howls and thuds. Thuds so firm on the ground it would shake a little.
The boy couldn’t help it, curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to creep forward. To see what was happening. As he crept through the trees, there was another loud thud that shook the ground, this time followed by a whimper. Two large wolves were fighting a large brown bear. One of them whimpered and hobbled on its paw. Two small cubs snarled and growled flashing their tiny little fangs trying to make themselves look big, it didn’t work. The big brown bear swung down, sending a wolf flying, its back cracking as it slammed into a tree. The second wolf growled in frustration, and jumped on to the bears back biting into its neck the bear panicked for a moment, tried to fling the wolf of it’s back, but struggled, until the bear stumbled backwards, losing its balance, fell into a tree, knocking the wind out of the wolf. The wolf let go and slumped to the floor, the bear took its chance and slammed its paw down on the wolf's face, killing it instantly.
The little wolf cubs ran forward, stumbling over their own feet. The bear noticed them, standing up on its back legs, it growled loudly, echoing through the forest, its slobber flying everywhere as it growled.
“Oh no you fucking don’t!” Nekonata ran through the trees and roared at the top of his voice, bow and arrow in hand, he jumped and skidded towards the bear, and let an arrow fly going straight through the bear's raised paw. The bear howled in pain, shaking its paw trying to get the arrow loose.
Nekonata scooped both of the cubs up and pushed them back into the den “Restu!” He said softly, he then shook his head, “What did I just say?” Somehow the cubs understood, they listened and stayed.
The bear had finally got the arrow out of its paw, and went to swing at him, the cub with a blue and brown eye barked. Nekonata dodged it just in time. Quickly grabbing an arrow he aimed at the bear, his arrow hit the bear in the shoulder, but the animal now enraged didn’t react. It dropped on all fours, growling, baring its fangs. “Damn your breath stinks, you should learn to brush them teeth!” Neko scarpers backwards, slowly getting back to his feet, pulling another arrow for his quiver, he notched it to his bow. The bear charged, Neko turned and ran towards a tree, he jumped up the trunk of the tree, bending his knees he sprang off the tree vaulting over the bear's head and shot his arrow, shooting it straight into the bear's head. The bear stopped almost like it was frozen in time, then with a resounding thud crashed to the floor, dead.
“Bloody hell that was hard work!” He commented, staring at the bear. He walked over to the large wolves, shoved them in the shoulder gently. He heard the soft patter of paws as the little cubs came forward. “I’m sorry little ones, they didn’t make it.” The cubs whimpered, tears forming in the corner of their eyes. “Well you can’t stay here can you, it’s not safe now. You’ll have to come with me, I’ll be your friend, amiko.” Nekonata slapped himself in the face, “Amiko? The fuck does that mean?”
But the wolf cub's ears pricked backwards and forwards, they looked at him like they understood for the second time. “How about it then? Seems like you seem to understand me, somehow.”
The cubs looked at each other and both put a paw on his knee.
“Well if you're going to come with me I guess I need to give you a name don’t I?” The cubs looked at him confused. “Hmm, Tom and Larry?” They scrunch their faces up, “Well that’s a no… what about Donnie and Walker?” The cubs growled. “A definite no… Santaya, and Kristolia?” The cubs leaned forwards on the fronts, tails wagging wildly. “Ooooh, so you are girl pups then! Now I get it!” He put his hand on the head of the cub with a brown and blue eye, “You are Santaya, Santi for short.” Then put his other hand on the head of the cub with two blue eyes, “You are called Kristolia, Kristi for short.” The cubs bounced on their paws excitedly.
“Well.. come on then girls, let's go, we need to create some distance from here.”
Little did Nekonata know, somewhere high up hopping from tree branch to tree branch was a large raven following him, watching him closely. ‘After two months, I’ve finally found you.’ The raven said in its mind with a sigh of relief.
