Peace.

I think one of the boldest things someone can do is to distance themselves from people who destroy their peace.

A few days ago, a woman friend of mine was talking about this, and I remember feeling genuinely inspired. I have admired this particular woman for a long time, and hearing her speak about choosing herself made me think about how often we tolerate people who shatter our mental peace, emotionally manipulate us, make us anxious, or leave us constantly questioning our own worth.

Why should we keep going through something that continuously harms us?

Our mental health matters. And while the people around us may care, no one can truly know what is happening inside our minds the way we do.

I also happened to watch an interview with Anupama Parameswaran where she spoke about NPD, and something about it deeply affected me. Somewhere along the way, I realised that I, too, could see a little bit of myself in her story. What moved me most was not merely what she had gone through, but the courage it took to cut herself away from what was hurting her, to come out of it, and eventually speak about it.

And honestly, it isn't easy.

It is never as simple as saying, “Just leave.” People who have never stood in our shoes may never understand how difficult it can be to walk away from someone who has become deeply entangled with our emotions, memories, and lives.

But perhaps that is exactly why choosing yourself is such a bold act.

So this is what I am beginning to understand: your mental health has to be a priority. Nobody, not even the people closest to you, can completely know what is happening inside your mind. You do. And sometimes, protecting yourself means creating distance, setting boundaries, or walking away from people who repeatedly disturb your peace.

So, let us stop abandoning ourselves just to keep other people in our lives.

Let us choose ourselves.

Let us preserve our peace, because there is still so much life waiting for us to live.
