THE GREY CONTRACT
Monday. 8:47 PM.
The office was almost empty.
Only the soft ticking of the wall clock and the distant sound of rain against the glass windows disturbed the silence.
Ana Morgan sat at her desk, reviewing the final documents for the following morning's board meeting.
She had been working for Mr. Grey for eleven months.
Eleven months of perfectly organised schedules, endless meetings, strict deadlines and a boss who rarely smiled.
Grey wasn't an ordinary man.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't repeat instructions.
And he never tolerated mistakes.
People respected him.
Some feared him.
Ana had learned to understand his silences better than his words.
"Miss Morgan."
His deep voice came from behind her.
She immediately looked up.
"Yes, Mr. Grey?"
"You're still here."
"Your presentation for tomorrow isn't finished, sir."
He glanced at the clock.
"Did I ask you to stay this late?"
"No, sir. But you need these documents by morning."
He studied her for a moment.
"You're unusually comfortable making decisions on my behalf."
Ana smiled faintly.
"Only when they're necessary."
For the first time that evening, something almost resembling a smile appeared on his face.
"Interesting."
He walked towards his office, then stopped at the doorway.
"Bring me the final file. And Ana?"
"Yes?"
"Lock the door behind you."
She paused.
Not because the request was unusual.
But because of the way he had said it.
A few minutes later, Ana entered his office with the documents.
Grey stood beside the enormous glass window, his hands resting inside his trouser pockets.
"Put them on the desk."
She followed his instruction.
As she turned to leave, his voice stopped her again.
"Tell me something, Ana."
She turned around.
"Do you always follow instructions so carefully?"
A small silence followed.
"Only when I trust the person giving them, sir."
His eyes remained fixed on hers.
"And what happens when you don't?"
Ana held his gaze.
"Then I ask questions."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Grey slowly picked up the document.
"Good answer."
She reached for the door.
"Goodnight, Mr. Grey."
"Goodnight, Miss Morgan."
But neither of them knew that this ordinary Monday evening would eventually become the beginning of an extraordinary agreement.
An agreement neither would be able to forget.
To be continued...
