National Press Day - 16th November. An independent and free press is one of the four pillars of a strong democracy. To highlight the importance of a free and independent press in India, National Press Day is celebrated on the 16th of November every year. The press council of India is a free-acting body.

James Augustus Hicky is known as the father of Indian journalism. He launched India's first newspaper, the Bengal Gazette along with the Calcutta General Advertiser, in 1780. The paper lasted just two years before being seized by the British administration in 1782 for its outspoken criticism of the Raj.
It was first set up in 1966 under the Indian Press Council Act, 1965, on the recommendations of the first Press Commission, with the two-fold objective of preserving the freedom of the press by maintaining and improving the standards of newspapers and the news agencies in India.
The introduction of the Press in India can be attributed to James Augusts Hickey, who was responsible for publishing the first-ever newspaper in India. The newspaper was published in 1780 and was called"the Bengal Gazette or the Calcutta General Advertiser".
In 1605," Johann Carolus" published the first regular newspaper in Straßburg, comprising brief news bulletins. The world's first daily newspaper appeared in 1650 in Leipzig. Later, Prussia increasingly became the largest and most dominant of the German states, but their newspapers were kept under tight control.
However, Freedom of press or media refers to the rights given by the Constitution of India under the freedom and expression of speech in Article 19(1)(a). It encourages independent journalism and promotes democracy by letting the people voice their opinions for or against the government's actions.
