Designated by the UN, 20th March is celebrated as an International Day Of Happiness.

International Day of Happiness also known as World Happiness Day is celebrated every year around the world on 20 March. The day is observed to spread awareness about the importance of happiness in our lives.

Usually, we say or listen: "Don’t worry, be happy!"

But do we actually think keenly about what happiness is and its importance?

It is believed that happiness is a universal aspiration in the lives of all and is a fundamental human right and goal for all. Therefore, the United Nations established March 20 as the International Day of Happiness, which is observed annually, and adopted a resolution calling for happiness to be given greater priority. Now, the day has become a global campaign. The day has been celebrated since 2013 to make people aware of the importance of happiness in their lives.

It has been initiated by the United Nations by including the Right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness in the Internal Law for Human Rights. The idea of making the day an international day was initiated by Bhutan.

It aims to spread the message that the progress of a nation should be about increasing human happiness and wellbeing, and not just growth of the economy.

The theme for the current year #2022 is, Keep Calm, Stay Wise and Be Kind

If you’re happy and you know it, celebrate it on International Day of Happiness on March 20! Other than being in a neutral state, happy is how we should mostly be. Unfortunately, emotions like anger and sadness are increasingly becoming a default way to be for a lot of us, so here’s a day to cheer up and appreciate the good things and silver linings in life.

Around 2000 years ago, the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle said, "Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim, and end of human existence." It is still true today.

Happiness is the experience of positive emotions, including joy, contentment, and satisfaction. Some research shows that being happier does not just make you feel better, but actually brings a host of potential health benefits.

International Day of Happiness

Ten Steps to Global Happiness. And by working to promote and advance:

  1. Happiness as a fundamental human right and goal for all
  2. Happiness as a universal aspiration in the lives of all
  3. Happiness as a way of living, being, and serving communities and society
  4. Happiness as a north star for individuals, communities, governments, and society.
  5. Happiness path toward achieving the sustainable development goals
  6. Happiness as a “new paradigm’ for human development
  7. Worldwide celebration of the international day of happiness that is democratic, diverse, organic, and inclusive

10 STEPS TO GLOBAL HAPPINESS FOR 2022

1. TELL EVERYONE.

Tell everyone about the International Day of Happiness and the Russian war against democracy, freedom, Ukraine, the United Nations, all of humanity, and all of civilization.
Tell everyone.

2. DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

Do what makes you happy on this day and every day, and especially if you are a refugee from Ukraine or any country, or still in Ukraine fighting on the front lines for democracy, freedom, and happiness for all. As anyone in war knows, humor, laughter, and meditation can be the best ways to break the anxiety of conflict.

3. GIVE AND SPREAD HAPPINESS TO OTHERS.

Give and spread happiness to others, especially refugees displaced and/or fleeing any country including Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Myanmar, Venezuela, DR Congo, and more.

Give and Spread Happiness to Others.

4. ATTEND A WORLD HAPPINESS EVENT.

Attend a World Happiness Week event such as the 10th World Happiness Report launch, and World Happiness Week by the World Happiness foundation.

5. CELEBRATE.

Step 5 is to create your own #InternationalDayofHappiness or World Happiness Week celebration. Promote it on Social Media, put out a Press Release, let the world know about your Happiness Day event!

6. SHARE WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

Share what makes you happy on social media, as well as information about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and others worldwide so people around the world and especially in Russia know the truth.

Use instagram hashtags #happinessforallukraine, #tenbillionhappy, #internationaldayofhappiness, #happinessday, #choosehappiness, #createhappiness, or #makeithappy to spread happiness!

Celebrate.

7. PROMOTE THE RESOLUTIONS.

UN RESOLUTION 65/309
Happiness: towards a holistic approach to development

UN RESOLUTION 66/281

8 . ADVANCE THE UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL GOALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

9. ENJOY NATURE.

Step 9 is to get outside, enjoy nature, and connect with the environment. Some ideas are going for a hike, going to the park, visiting lakes and natural sites to get in touch with nature. Research studies from around the world have proven that spending time with nature increases happiness and well-being levels.

10. ADOPT HAPPYTALISM.
Step 10 is to adopt and spread a more holistic, inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples, such as Happytalism.

WAYS TO HELP

There are many crisis situations happening around the world in Ukraine, Yemen, Gaza and elsewhere.

Today on the International Day of Happiness we are reminded that our actions matter and that each of us can help build a more compassionate world, wherever we are.

Here are three ways that you can spread happiness today:

SHARE POSITIVE MESSAGES

Spread ideas that promote peace, kindness and understanding, online and in real life

.CONNECT WITH PEOPLE

Reach out to people who you know are connected to a crisis and offer your care and support.

GIVE DIRECTLY

Donate to causes working on the front line of a crisis or find a way to help with local efforts.

TRADITIONS OF THE DAY
Everyone has their own definition of happiness, or things that make them happy, which is why there are no traditions set in stone for this day. Happiness is about feeling content and not having to fake your feelings, so whatever makes you happy, you do you! Being internally happy is key to being satisfied with your surroundings, so challenge yourself and be open to new people and experiences. Cherish the little things, and be grateful for everything in that moment.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the World Happiness Report, which uses global survey data to report how people evaluate their own lives in more than 150 countries worldwide. The World Happiness Report 2022 reveals a bright light in dark times. The pandemic brought not only pain and suffering but also an increase in social support and benevolence. As we battle the ills of disease and war, it is essential to remember the universal desire for happiness and the capacity of individuals to rally to each other’s support in times of great need
