Durga - The Embodiment of Feminism

Helloooo good guys!!

So, as today is Vijayadashami, let me try to paint a picture of what is Durga is all about, what is Navratri is all about. If you find that I misrepresented/misinterpreted something in this post, forgive me and feel free to correct me. And am sorry for being late to post this, gosh I am lazy.

1)What is the meaning of Durga?
It means “the one who takes us through difficulties” or “the invincible one”. She equips you with the necessary things to go through anything and come out of it as a victor. She is energy, the energy that brings growth and change in society. She is the one that brings families and people together. Without her, everything just falls apart. She is a woman. She is a mother, she is a sister, she is a friend, she is a girlfriend, she is a wife, she is a daughter, she is an employee, she is a CEO, she is an unknown girl walking on the road, she is a random stranger that you chat with, in the chatrooms.

2)What does Durga represent?
She represents an empowered woman. No, she is not empowered by some man. Although men are involved in her creation, she is the one that had to fight the battles alone, she is the one that had to stand up for herself, she is the one that empowered herself. So many problems came her way. She is flexible enough to solve all of them and came out as a victor. She became quite a strong woman. She became independent, so independent that you don’t find many photos of Durga standing beside some god. She stands alone, very confidently, smiling like a boss while sitting on a lion.

3)Why does Durga have so many hands?
Multiple hands represent the multi-tasking capability of a woman, multiple qualities she has. She holds different weapons of different gods in her hands. Usually, one god can only handle one or two weapons. She handles different weapons and she doesn’t even look tired although she is holding all of them.

To give birth, a woman struggles a lot. Nobody prepares her for that pain, yet she survives. When she takes the child in her arms she makes a vow to protect the child at all costs. When the child starts walking she is the one that walks along with the child to cheer the child up, when the child is running all around the house, she is the one that runs behind the child to feed the child. She is the first line of defence, she is the person a man always leans on for guidance when he is going through tough times. She is the person that prepares men every day to go outside and do whatever they want to do. She never gets tired to do something for the happiness of the people she cares for.

And while managing all that she never forgets she has her own life, she has her own dreams. So she pursues them like a champ. It doesn’t matter what the world throws at her, what the world gotta say about her, she is beyond all that, she will show the world what she is capable of, she will never shy away from what she has to offer to any field. She is capable of all that. She is the sky, she is capable of acceptance. She is air, she is invisible but she is always there. She is earth, she is capable of infinite patience. She is water, she is flexible in her approach. She is fire, she is capable of destroying darkness and stigmas.

4)Why she rides a lion/tiger?
Lion/tiger represents wild nature that resides inside every being. Durga tamed her wild nature. She has total control over it. And when you have control, you don’t get carried away. When you don’t get carried away, you have clarity. To represent this she rides a lion. Nowadays most people let these lions ride them, isn’t it?

This is why it is hard to win an argument with women. They ride the lion, so they have clarity.

Lion also represents a difficult situation to deal with. She dealt with it and owned the situation. She reminds people to face the problems, she reminds people to don’t run away from the problems.

5)Why she has 3 eyes?
The 3rd eye represents her wisdom. Her awareness of the situation. Women plan well compared to men, isn’t it? The three eyes also represent three stages of the human life cycle. The childhood, adulthood and old age. In childhood, she is there for you as a mother. When you became an adult, she is there for you as your partner. When you become old, she will be there for you as a daughter. Nothing goes unnoticed by her. She will oversee you till your last breath. She is Trikala Gnani, she is aware of your past, present and she decides your future. Take care of her and she will take care of you better.

6)Why she wears a red saree?
Red represents passion. She pursues her passion. She does everything with passion. So she does things better than most people. So she always stands out from the crowd. She is unique in her own way.

7)What is Durga’s philosophy?
Durga’s philosophy is simple. Don’t care about what others gotta say, you don’t have to. Just focus on what you do, know that you are capable, know that you are powerful. When Durga was on the battlefield, the demons looked at her and laughed at her. They thought “what she can do?”. Well, she proved all of them wrong. These demons not necessarily be some people in society, they can be some situations that you have to face. Just face it with faith in yourself, with planning, you will conquer them. If you are a female, Durga, well, she is not to be found on the outside, she is to be found on the inside, she is within you, she is you. You just have to bring her out.

The purpose of Navrathri is to remind women to find the Durga within them. Navdurgas are representations of the qualities every female has within her.

Devi Durga is considered as the feminine epitome of strength. She is depicted in variety of Vedic literature as a goddess having feminine prowess, power, determination, wisdom and punishment much beyond this material world
