Epic Legend

If I were to be examined through psychological scrutiny, I would score a 10/10 on self esteem.
I love myself a lot.
I can depend on myself.
This is what it means to protect my inner world.

But if someone were to profess their love and I'm told I could have a chance at genuine love, I would mistrust it.

That even if he says he wants to be with me, rejection is soon on the way.
He lies, or
He is mistaken, or

He will change his mind.

"Nobody will love me except I"
Became the default I tell myself.
"Love, external to me, is unreliable. If I trust it, I'll break my own heart later on."

Someone sweetly told me he wants to protect me, cherish me. And i told myself he lies. Every word i uttered back in response dripped with the malice of mistrust. Until he withered away, until he doubted his own worth of receiving affection, until he left broken hearted. Only he didn't see me fiercely protecting my heart, my peace, lest someone steal it away.

And even though I once dreamed of a love which he offered without resistance this time, i didn't have to beg for someone's affection this time, I still doubt it's authenticity..as though love outside of me, could only hurt me now.

There's something quietly heartbreaking about becoming so good at protecting your heart that you forget how to let someone in...

Sometimes, the walls we build to keep hurt away also keep genuine affection at a distance...

And perhaps, not everyone who comes close intends to hurt us; some are simply left trying to prove a sincerity that our fears refuse to believe...
