When I get older, I will be stronger. They'll call me freedom, just like a waving flag
Wow!! It has been 16 years since the 2010 World Cup. Time flies like crazy. Even now, that song, alongside Waka Waka makes my World Cup memories so beautiful. 2010 was the first time I watched a World Cup while actually knowing all the rules. I owe a huge thank you to the friend who gave me my very first football lessons. I still remember him handing over his Game Boy just so I could experience the digital version of this wonderful game. Together, we played, competed, and fell in love with it.
At first, football was just a game. But quickly, it became a passion—something I would gladly sacrifice my time and sleep for. Bloody hell, I have been deeply in love with this game for almost 17 years now. Coming from a place where everyone eats, sleeps, and breathes cricket, I somehow fell for football instead. Luckily, I found like-minded friends who shared that exact same energy.
Back then, I didn't have a favorite national team. But my father was a diehard fan of Brazil. Since your father is always your first hero, I naturally started supporting Brazil too. And what a team they had! The talent was endless: Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Kaká, Robinho, Roberto Carlos... the list goes on. There was a unique beauty to their gameplay. Their traditional Samba style mesmerized every single football fan. Oh god, they were incredible. Unfortunately, Brazil had a tough, heartbreaking run and got knocked out in 2010.
I was devastated by that knockout. Later i got to know It's not about winning or losing the game; it's about the beautiful game that unites our hearts, defies boundaries, and keeps us dreaming through every sleepless night. I vividly remember watching the tournament with an older brother from my neighborhood. I stayed over at his house, and we stayed up until midnight to watch the matches. Imagine an 11-year-old kid waking up in the dead of night just to watch a football tournament. That was what football meant to me.
I think most people would agree that South Africa 2010 is one of the best World Cups ever hosted. The tournament just had a completely different vibe. And who could forget the Jabulani ball? Diego Forlán worked pure magic with it, while it became the ultimate nightmare for goalkeepers. So many unforgettable memories.
Three World Cups have passed since then, but the memories of 2010 remain right at the forefront of my mind. Now, as June approaches, another World Cup is finally here. Millions of Indians will temporarily "change their nationality" for the next two months out of pure love for the game. It is incredibly frustrating that there is no official broadcast in India this time, but as always, we will find a way.
I am ready for more sleepless nights. VIVA BRAZIL!
