I Was Everyone’s Safe Place, But Who Was Mine?

ATheo7

Wellknown Ace
I have always been the kind of person who wants everyone around me to be safe, happy, and cherished. I have always wanted to be the person who stays when everyone else leaves, who listens when someone has no words left, who reaches out when someone is falling, and who quietly makes sure the people I care about are okay. Somewhere along the way, I became so busy protecting everyone else's happiness that I forgot my own happiness needed protection too.

Even when someone curses me, misunderstands me, or says something that hurts more than they probably realize, my first instinct is still to smile. Not because their words do not hurt, but because I have become so accustomed to hiding the pain that sometimes even I forget where I put it. I smile when I want to argue. I smile when I want to cry. I smile when something inside me quietly breaks, because somehow I have always believed that my pain should never become someone else's burden. Maybe that smile has become my oldest disguise, a curtain I pull across the windows of my heart so nobody sees how badly the storm is raging inside.

I became a lamp for people standing in darkness, constantly giving away my light without ever asking who would light mine when I began to fade. I became a shelter for everyone else's storms while quietly standing in the rain myself. I celebrated other people's happiness as if their smiles were my own victories, carried their sadness as if it belonged to me, and kept telling myself that as long as everyone I loved was okay, I would be okay too.

But happiness does not work that way. You cannot keep pouring water from an empty well and expect it to remain full. You cannot spend your entire life stitching the wounds of others while pretending your own scars do not hurt. Somewhere between being everyone's safe place and everyone's strongest shoulder, I quietly became a stranger to my own heart.

And perhaps that is the part of me I am only beginning to understand. I do not always smile because I am happy. Sometimes I smile because I do not know what else to do with the pain. Sometimes a smile is simply the last piece of strength I have left. I have learned to swallow words, forgive quietly, walk away silently, and carry things that were never mine to carry. I have become very good at saying "it's okay" when it really isn't.

I am slowly learning that I deserve to be cared for too. I deserve someone who notices the difference between my real smile and the one I wear to hide a wound. I deserve someone who looks beyond my expression and asks what my heart is too tired to say. I deserve to be cherished without having to sacrifice pieces of myself for it.

Maybe I was never meant to be the light that burns itself away just so everyone else can see. Maybe I was meant to understand that even the person who always smiles can be hurting, even the strongest person can become tired, and even the one who spends his life making everyone else feel safe deserves somewhere safe to rest.

So I will still wish happiness for the people I love. I will still try to protect them from storms when I can. I will still smile, even when life gives me reasons not to. But this time, I want to remember to keep a little of that light for myself too.

And if I have expressed too much, I am sorry. I think I have spent so long keeping everything inside that when I finally find a place where I feel safe enough to speak, sometimes the words come out all at once. I am not asking anyone to carry my sadness for me. I just wanted, for once, to let someone see the person behind the smile. The person who feels deeply, loves deeply, forgives quietly, and sometimes gets tired too. Maybe this was simply my heart asking for a moment to breathe.

There is something quietly heartbreaking about being everyone's safe place while having to figure out how to be your own.

Being kind, forgiving, and emotionally available should never mean constantly abandoning yourself.

You don't have to earn the right to be cared for by being endlessly understanding of everyone else.

And please, never apologise for expressing what you feel.✨

Sometimes the strongest people aren't the ones who keep smiling through everything, but the ones who finally allow themselves to be seen beyond that smile.

You deserve the same gentleness you so effortlessly give to others. ❤️

And hey, please don't apologise for expressing yourself. You haven't said too much.

I think you've mastered the art of bleeding so quietly that people call it maturity simply because the floor stays clean. But I hope you realise that you don't have to keep doing that. You don't always have to be composed, understanding or strong. You're allowed to have moments when you need someone, too.

And please, never feel that your vulnerable moments make you any less of the person you are. You deserve the same kindness you so effortlessly give to others. I hope you find people around whom you can finally put down the weight you've been carrying, without having to explain why it's heavy.

You deserve to be held with the same tenderness with which you've spent your life holding others together.

And lastly, if life ever gets a little too heavy and you happen to find me around, we can always sit, talk about absolutely everything or nothing at all, until the weight feels a little lighter. You don't always need solutions; sometimes, a little company is enough.

This is one of the most heartbreakingly honest things I have ever read. We sentence ourselves to a lifetime of being everyone else's sanctuary completely forgetting that we are locking ourselves outside in the freezing rain. Hiding your wounds behind a smile doesn't make the pain disappear it just turns your own mind into a silent courtroom where you are constantly apologizing for your own existence. You are not a machine built to burn itself out for the comfort of others. Please never apologize for letting the words spill out when your heart finally demanded a moment to breathe. You absolutely deserve the exact same tenderness and protection that you have so selflessly poured into everyone else. Beautifully and devastatingly said.
