"When Caring Costs You a Friendship"

I Never Wanted to Be Right. I Wanted Us to Grow.
Based on true events.

You cannot fix a mind that enjoys being wrong. Let me tell you a true story from my life.

I had a friend I genuinely wanted to grow with. Whenever I felt he was making the wrong decision, I used to offer him advice and explain my reasoning. Sometimes, we would argue, but eventually, he slowly started distancing himself from me.

I kept wondering why he was growing so distant until I realised that maybe he didn’t want me to tell him what he was doing wrong. He just wanted someone who would agree with him. Unfortunately, we stopped talking.

It honestly hurts because I never wanted to prove that I was right. I just wanted to see him do better. But sometimes, you can care about someone, give them the best advice you have, and still have to let them go.

I believe caring about someone also means being honest with them, even when the truth isn't what they want to hear. But there's a difference between offering advice and making someone feel they constantly need to change. Sometimes, people need guidance; other times, they simply need someone to listen without judging. The intention may be to help, but understanding when to speak and when to step back is also a part of caring.

Perhaps the hardest part of caring is knowing that we can offer our perspective, but we cannot choose what someone is ready to hear.

Not every disagreement means a lack of care, and not every distance means a lack of love.

This is the cursed world

Never advise unless asked, especially in close relationships. Most people just want to hear themselves talk, so listen attentively.
you need not agree, but just do not give your opinion. The other person is living their life and we are living our own. They want to live it according to themselves, just as we want to live ours as we see fit.

Also remember that we may also be wrong, and even our advice could be wrong.

Even my opinion here could be wrong for some people or in certain circumstances.

Sometimes, people mistake genuine concern for criticism. Not everyone is ready to hear what they need, even when it comes from someone who truly cares.✨

You’re right. I was so focused on helping him that I may not have asked what he actually needed from me. Having good intentions doesn’t mean we always get the approach right.

That’s fair. Being close to someone doesn’t mean we always know what’s best for them. I can see how advice meant as care could still feel like pressure.

That’s what hurt most. I thought I was saying, “I care about what happens to you,” but he may have been hearing, “You don’t trust me to make my own choices.” Looking back, I wish we’d understood each other before the distance became silence.
