Some people are bad decisions. He's the one she keeps making.

Main characters
- Damon Blackwood, 22 — the university's untouchable hockey captain. Arrogant, dangerously charming, emotionally unavailable, and hiding a past nobody dares mention.
- Iris Bennett, 20 — sharp-tongued, stubborn, and completely unimpressed by rich boys who think the world belongs to them.
- The problem: Her mother is marrying Damon's father. They'll be living under the same roof.
And Damon has already decided he hates her.

Or that's what he wants her to believe.

PART 1 — Unfortunately, He's Home
The first thing Damon Blackwood said to me was, "You're in my seat."
The second was, "Actually, you're in my house."
I looked up from the kitchen counter.
He stood in the doorway wearing a black university hockey jersey, his hair damp from the rain, and an expression that suggested my existence had personally offended him.
I took another bite of his expensive-looking sandwich.

"Tragic. Want me to call someone?"
His eyes dropped to the sandwich.
"That's mine."
"Oh, thank God. I thought it tasted like entitlement."
He stared at me.
Then he laughed once, without a hint of amusement.

"You're the new stepsister."
"You're the disappointment?"
His eyebrows rose.
I smiled sweetly.
"Guess we're both making sacrifices."

He walked toward me, stopping on the other side of the counter.
"Here's how this works, princess. Stay out of my room, stay out of my business, and don't touch my things."
I glanced at the sandwich.
"Should've mentioned that before I ate your lunch."
"Iris."
I hated that he already knew my name.
"What?"
He leaned forward slightly.
"You're going to be a problem."
I shrugged. "You look like you could use one."
For the first time, he actually smiled.
And, annoyingly, it changed his entire face.

Then his gaze shifted past me to the staircase.
"One more thing."
"What now?"
"Don't bring boys home."
I blinked.
Then burst out laughing.

"Oh, you're hilarious."
"I'm serious."
"You're not my father."
His smile vanished.
"No," he said quietly. "I'm worse."
He walked away before I could respond.
I stood there, sandwich in hand, wondering whether my mother's new stepson was always this insufferable.

Then my phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
Unknown: You should probably know that Damon has a girlfriend.
I typed back.
Me: Good for him?
Three dots appeared.
Unknown: She doesn't know he's been asking about you.
My smile disappeared.
From upstairs, I heard a door slam
And then Damon's voice, sharp and furious, cut through the silence.
"WHO GAVE HER MY NUMBER?"
I stared at my phone.
Oh.
This was going to be a disaster.

(tried writing something hope yaa all like it.....its part wise will post other parts too hehehe)

You are a literal lil demon for leaving the chapter right there, you know that? The dialogue is so snappy and the tension on the sandwich so high lowkey making me blush... ;)

Is Damon about to storm into her room, or is someone getting pinned against a wall next chapter?? :blessing:

PART 2 — His Girlfriend Hates Me
By breakfast, Damon's girlfriend hated me.
By lunch, I understood why.
And by dinner, I was seriously considering moving into a dumpster.
"You're Iris, right?"

The girl standing outside my bedroom had perfect hair, perfect makeup, and the kind of smile that made you instinctively check whether your wallet was still there.
"I'm Vanessa. Damon's girlfriend."
She looked me up and down.
"So you're the new stepsister."
"That's what the paperwork says."

She didn't laugh.
Okay. Tough crowd.
"Listen," she said, stepping inside without permission. "Damon can be difficult."
"Really? I thought the death stares were his way of saying good morning."

Her smile tightened.
"He's not interested in girls who play games."
"Great. I don't play hockey either. We have so much in common."

"Iris."
I turned.
Damon stood behind her, holding a mug of coffee.

His expression was unreadable.
Vanessa immediately brightened. "Baby!"
She walked over and kissed his cheek.

He barely reacted.
Interesting.
Then his eyes found mine.
"Kitchen. Five minutes."

I raised my eyebrows. "Ask nicely."

"Iris."
"Still waiting for the magic word."
He took a sip of coffee.
"Please get out of my sight."
"See? Was that so hard?"

I walked past him, smiling.

As I reached the doorway, he spoke quietly enough that only I could hear.
"Stop replying to unknown numbers."
I froze.

Then I turned around.

"How do you know about the messages?"
His jaw tightened.
"Because the person texting you is sitting in this house."

My smile disappeared.
Behind him, Vanessa was watching us.
And she wasn't smiling anymore.

That evening, I found Damon in the garage.
He was sitting on the hood of a black sports car, staring at his phone.
"Do you ever do anything normal?" I asked.

He didn't look up.
"Do you ever knock?"
"On a garage?"
"On your way out of my life."

I leaned against the workbench.
"Your girlfriend thinks I'm trying to steal you."
That got his attention.
He looked up slowly.
"And are you?"

I laughed.

"Please. I'd rather date a parking ticket."
"Good."
"Good?"

He slid off the car and walked toward me.
"Because I'm not the kind of guy you want, Iris."
Something about the way he said it made my smile fade.

"Trust me, Damon. You're not that special."

He stopped a few feet away.
"Then why do you keep looking at me?"

My mouth opened.
Nothing came out.

His gaze held mine for one long, unbearable second.
Then he stepped aside, opening the garage door.
"Go upstairs."
I walked past him, furious with myself for noticing how close we'd been standing.
But just before I reached the stairs, he said my name.

I turned.
He held up his phone.
On the screen was a photograph of me arriving at the house that morning.

Taken from across the street.
Underneath it was a message.
SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT YOU DID TO HER BROTHER.

Damon's face had gone completely pale.

I stared at the screen.
Then at him.
"My brother?"
He locked his phone.
"Iris, go inside."

I couldn't move.

"What happened to my brother?"
For the first time since I'd met him, Damon looked genuinely terrified.
Not of me.
For me.

"If you want to keep hating me," he whispered, "don't ask me that question."
