Part 4: Before the Answer
One day, while Vedha and Sarang were doing what had slowly become their usual thing in the group chat, he suddenly took a dive into her PM.
And by their usual thing, it was safe to assume that flirting was involved. On Zozo, even an ordinary conversation had a way of turning into something else.
His message was casual, nothing extraordinary. But it was the first time Sarang had messaged her privately, and Vedha replied without hesitation.
Surprisingly, there was no awkwardness.
She had never been fond of entertaining strangers in her inbox. With unfamiliar people, conversations often felt like work. But Sarang wasn't a stranger anymore. They already knew each other's humour, had exchanged countless remarks in the group chat, and had spent enough time teasing each other to feel comfortable.
Their private chats soon became a familiar part of their time on Zozo.
Some days, they exchanged only a few messages; on others, one conversation effortlessly led to another. They moved between random topics, playful arguments, silly jokes, and flirtatious remarks.
The flirting remained mild, wrapped in humour and tucked between ordinary sentences. Nothing serious, nothing that demanded an explanation. They never discussed what they were doing or felt any need to define it.
Days passed like that.
Gradually, Sarang became someone Vedha expected to see around.
She was still the same person who had joined Zozo simply to have a good time. She still enjoyed group conversations, flirted for fun, and had no intention of turning an online connection into something that followed her into everyday life.
At least, that was what she kept telling herself.
Then, one day, Sarang casually asked if they could exchange contacts outside Zozo.
He didn't make a big deal out of it or surround the question with emotional declarations. He asked as though it were the most natural next step for two people who had been talking for a while.
But for Vedha, it wasn't that simple.
Zozo had always been a separate little world for her. She could enter whenever she wanted, talk to whoever she liked, and leave without carrying any of it into her everyday life.
Inside Zozo, things were easy. Neither owed the other constant attention or explanations for disappearing. Outside it, she wasn't sure the same rules would apply.
Sharing her contact might make talking easier, but it could also change things. A familiar username could become a daily presence, and a connection that belonged only to a chatroom might slowly find its way into their lives.
Was that necessarily a bad thing?
She didn't know.
Perhaps Sarang simply wanted an easier way to talk. Perhaps he was curious about the person behind the username he had grown familiar with. Maybe he wanted to know her beyond the group chat and their private conversations.
Or perhaps there was another reason.
But Vedha wasn't going to assume anything. She had no intention of inventing feelings he hadn't expressed or turning a simple question into a confession he hadn't made.
He had asked for her contact. That was all she knew.
And yet, she found herself thinking about it more than she expected.
It wasn't that she was afraid of talking to him. She already did that, quite comfortably. It wasn't even that she distrusted him. So far, their conversations had given her no particular reason to feel uneasy.
The hesitation came from somewhere else.
She had drawn that boundary long before Sarang came along. She had decided what Zozo meant to her, what she wanted from it, and how far she was willing to let anyone into her life.
Now, someone she actually enjoyed talking to was asking her to reconsider.
And that made the decision more complicated than she wanted it to be.
If it had been anyone else, the answer would have come easily. A polite refusal, perhaps a joke to change the subject, and that would have been the end of it.
But this was Sarang.
Sarang was someone she had grown comfortable with, someone who made conversations effortless and could turn an ordinary exchange into a flirtatious game.
She wasn't ready to call it attachment, or give it any name at all. But she couldn't help wondering: would exchanging contacts really change anything?
Vedha had always valued her boundaries, yet Sarang had given her a reason to question one. He hadn't demanded anything; he had simply asked. The choice was hers - to keep their connection within Zozo or let it exist beyond the chatroom, without promising anything more.
For once, the answer didn't come easily.
Would she stick to her rule, or would Sarang become the first exception?
