The thought of losing him became unbearable to her. She began paying attention to every little change in his behaviour, searching for meanings that might not even exist. A delayed reply made her restless, a cancelled plan made her suspicious, and an innocent mention of another woman's name could disturb her entire day. The more she feared losing him, the more desperately she tried to keep him close.
He initially responded with patience. He explained his plans, made extra efforts to spend time with her, and tried to convince her that his love had not changed. But gradually, he realised that no amount of reassurance could satisfy a fear that kept finding new reasons to exist.
She interpreted his need for personal space as a lack of affection. He began feeling guilty for wanting ordinary things—a quiet evening, time with friends, or an uninterrupted day at work. Their conversations increasingly revolved around her doubts rather than their dreams.
What frightened her most was that he had started becoming quieter. What she failed to understand was that he was not necessarily loving her less; he was struggling to find room to breathe within a relationship he still wanted to preserve.
When the fear of losing someone becomes stronger than the trust between two people, love can slowly turn into a desperate attempt to hold on—and in doing so, begin pushing the other person away.
