Chapter 21: Chaos

Storm clouds rolled over from the distance, the sounds of ironclad boots, hundreds beating against the ground marching through the valley, high cliffs loomed over the top of the soldiers, the area around in silence. Trees swayed to the left and right looking menacing. “I don’t like this!” Whispered a soldier to another.

A loud boom echoed in the valley as a crash of thunder ripped through the horizon. The trees stopped moving, but looked like they were leaning forward over the cliff sides.

“THAT TREE HAS A FACE!” Screamed a soldier somewhere in the middle of the army.

“DON’T BE FUCKING STUPID, TREES DON’T HAVE.. faces” The captains voice trailed off as he turned around his face was met with two black beady eyes staring at him. He screamed so loud, his high pitched screams echoed through the valley bouncing off the walls. One by one the soldiers started to panic.

Roots and vines started to creep up from the ground wrapping around ankles and legs slowly.
Rubian sensing something wasn’t right, dropped from his mount and lay against the floor, his ear close to the ground. He heard the screams, the fright of the screams. “Something’s wrong my lord” He said as he stood up to face King Thomaz. The king nodded, and Rubian climbed back on to his mount charging for the valley.

The roots and vines crept up all over the soldiers bodies, crushing them and dragging them into the bowls of the earth. Moments later the bloody curdling screams stopped. Silence. The valley was silent, the trees still. The valley appeared just as it should, the ground smooth and unblemished. The horses of the soldiers only remained snickering and eating grass.

Rubian suddenly skids to a halt on his mount at the entrance of the valley. Confused, he dropped off his mount and lay on the floor again, with his ear against the ground. He heard nothing, not a single sound.

“Where is the army? 400 soldiers gone, there’s no way they’d make it through the valley that fast.” Rubian said to himself in deep thought, so much in deep thought he didn’t notice one of the horses walk up to him, nuzzling his snout in Rubian’s face.

“Grey dapple mare, this is the Captain's horse!” Rubian glanced down the valley, and looked up towards the top of the valley walls… “Captain, where are you?” He called out. He slowly started to walk through the valley, very cautiously. “Captain?”

Rubian looked up the cliff side once again and noticed a charred tree. “Hmm… lightning? But there’s been no storm for days…” He continued to walk through the valley slowly. The trees swayed left to right slowly. Rubian got the chills up his back, the hairs on his arm all stood on ends, goosebumps forming. “I’m being watched, but by who?” Rubian muttered to himself.

Suddenly a large root whipped him across the chest sending him flying back towards the entrance of the valley, followed by a loud scream of Rubians “WHAT THE FUCK?!”

Rubian dropped to the floor, tried to stand up, but dropped back down to his knees gasping for breath. Blood dripped from the corner of his mouth. His hands shaking, he managed to put an orange orb out of his satchel “Heal Me!” He said shoving the orb into his chest, the area around Rubian darkened, the ground by his feet, dried up, the Captain’s horse shrieked as it shrivelled up, it’s life force drained, Rubian opened his mouth and sucked in the life force from the air, healing himself. A moment later the red haired, red eyed man stood up, his eyes searing with gleeful anger. “THAT FUCKING HURT!” He laughed loud, and wretchedly. “LET'S DO THIS SHIT AGAIN!”

Just as Rubian was about to walk into the valley again, a messenger appeared “Sir Rubian, his majesty would like a report.”

Rubian sighed, disappointed that his ‘fun’ was over. He climbed back up on to his own mount, and followed the messenger back to the king, glancing over his shoulder at the valley in wonder.
“Well Rubian, what’s the report, where is my army?”

“Gone.” Rubian replied bluntly.

“What the fuck do you mean gone? The kind demanded as he turned on his mount.

“No sign of the shoulders in the valley, just their horses. Captain’s horse is dead.”

Thomaz looked at Rubian frustrated. “What happened?”

“Trees, trees happened.” Rubian said, lifting up his tunic to show the bruise across his chest.

Yes I didn't want to write about them, but they are unfortunately an integral part of the story... but I did enjoy writing about Rubian getting hurt

yes, and because of the nature of the orbs and the dark magic he is using... it will eventually bite him back in the arse...
