I laughed under my breath.

“Never underestimate a lion, darling. I'm just choosing which words are worth saying.”

“Convenient excuse.”

“Terribly convenient,” I agreed, stepping a little closer. “Especially when you're standing there looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you already know my answer and you're simply enjoying watching me struggle.”

Your smile widened.

There she was. My beautiful troublemaker.

I brushed a loose strand of hair away from your face, letting my hand linger just long enough for you to notice.

“No,” I whispered. “I won't look at you the same way again.”

For once, you didn't tease me.

So I continued.

“Before, I used to wonder what you were thinking when you went quiet. Now, I'll probably spend my time wondering whether you're remembering the same moments I am.”

Your fingers tightened around mine.

“Before, I could finish a conversation with you and go about my day as if nothing had happened. Now, I have a feeling some completely ordinary thing will remind me of your smile, and I'll catch myself smiling for no reason.”

You looked away, but not before I noticed the softness in your eyes.

“And before,” I added, lowering my voice, “I could say goodbye without secretly wishing for one more minute.”

You looked back at me.

“One more minute?” you asked.

“At least.”

“And what would you do with it?”

I pretended to think.

“Probably annoy you.”

You laughed, lightly pushing my shoulder.

“Unbelievable.”

“Then I'd make you laugh again,” I continued. “And when you told me I was impossible, I'd remind you that you knew exactly what you were getting yourself into.”

“You're assuming an awful lot, LionHeart.”

“Perhaps.” I squeezed your hand gently. “But I'm hoping you'll keep surprising me.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The silence wasn't awkward. It didn't need rescuing with clever lines or another playful challenge.

It was simply ours.

I lifted your hand and pressed a gentle kiss to your knuckles.

That made you pause.

I held your gaze, my smile softening.

“Because I might enjoy the chase, beautiful, but I'd rather have a moment you choose freely than a thousand moments I have to guess about.”

Something warm passed between us.

Then you leaned against me, resting your head on my shoulder as naturally as if we'd done it a hundred times before.

I wrapped my arm around you.

No grand promises. No dramatic declarations about forever.
