The hashtag symbol (#) is officially called an octothorpe.The name "octothorpe" comes from "octo" meaning eight (referring to its eight points) and "thorpe" was added as a tribute to Olympian Jim Thorpe.

I don't use hashtags that much so whatever the name is I don't care.
