National Solidarity Day is a day of honour and gratitude for the Indian Armed Forces. It is observed on October 20 every year to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the Sino-Indian War of 1962.
In 1962, India and China engaged in war. The 1962 Indo-China War was known as such. The war began on October 20, 1962, and it was fought over the Kashmir border issue. The war lasted one month before coming to an end on November 21st, 1962. India was defeated by China in that conflict, and many of its men were kidnapped. India finally allowed China to occupy some of Kashmir, which became known as COK, or China Occupied Kashmir. There is a formal agreement stating that China owns COK and that India will not participate in it. This is a summary of the war. India was ruled by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1966. The 20th of October was designated as "National Solidarity Day" by the committee that elected Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in order to remember the soldiers who took part in the fight and the families of those soldiers who gave their lives in the conflict. After that, a day set aside each year to honour the armed forces is known as National Solidarity Day
