Perhaps, nothing more is entertaining than watching fans of certain movies defend their films. Whether it was Alien vs. Predator or Mothra vs. Godzilla, cinephiles never wasted any time depicting the other who rules. Like them, the recent film to have a similar impact is Greta Gertwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, both set to release on July 21.
Although the Barbie vs Oppenheimer battle seems superfluous on the surface, it is a cultural moment in the making. Not only do we have two directors who are masters of their craft, the stories, too, are a larger comment on human history. Barbie, for instance, has always been about aesthetics and beholding one's femininity, but Gertwig seems to turn this around and ask questions about the origin of the toy. Sure, Barbie can do it all, but there is also how her narrative has been created only to be liked by little girls. The film aims to change that perspective and bring more human qualities to the toy, but also comment on how women, at large, are perceived in a male-dominant world.
