The phone kept buzzing on the bedside table, the screen lighting up again and again, but she couldn't move...Her body felt too heavy. The fever had wrapped around her like fog..With trembling fingers, she finally managed to pick up the call.
"Why didn't you pick up earlier?"
His deep, worried voice came from the other side...She tried to whisper, "I..I just…" but before she could finish, he said, "I'm coming" and the call ended!!Within a few minutes, she heard a knock at her door...She dragged herself toward it, half-dizzy.. and there he was...He didn't say a word at first. Just one look at her pale face, and his expression changed completely into panic, concern, love, all tangled up....
"God, you're burning up" he murmured, cupping her face gently. "Have u taken ur medicine??" She weakly shook her head, whispering a faint "no" and he sighed!!He guided her back to bed like she was made of glass...His hands were careful, almost reverent. He found the medicine, gave her water, tucked the blanket tighter around her, and placed a cool, damp cloth on her forehead. Then he began to massage her hands and legs slowly, and whispering things she could barely hear!!His touch felt like comfort itself more like lullaby made of warmth...When she started shivering, he didn't think twice. He slid beside her, wrapping his arms around her trembling body, letting her rest her head against his chest..
"Sleep, baby girl" he whispered, his lips brushing her hair."I've got you."
The world outside faded...They drifted off together, her fever slowly melting under his warmth, his heartbeat steady against her ear...
Morning came quietly...Sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting the room gold. She blinked awake, feeling lighter, the ache gone. But something was pressing gently against her stomach. She looked down..His arm..He was still asleep, his face calm, almost childlike. A few strands of hair had fallen over his forehead, and a tiny frown rested on his lips as he stirred in his sleep. The world knew him as the cold, arrogant man who rarely smiled but this side of him, this soft, unguarded version, was hers alone...She smiled, her heart swelling as she brushed that stray lock of hair back. Leaning down, she pressed a feather-light kiss on his forehead, then another on his nose.
"I love you, my love" she whispered.
For a second, silence...Then his replied wid his half sleepy voice "I love you too babygurl" and reached for her hand, fingers intertwining with hers, holding it close as he whispered again, softer this time "I love you, baby girl." And kiss her hand..And just like that, the butterflies were back,
fluttering wild in her chest!!!
