The river does not ask its ending,
The rose does not ask to be named.
They give themselves to the morning,
Unbargained for, unclaimed.
But we question love like a stranger at the border:
Where are you headed? How long will you stay?
As if something this alive
Must show its papers to the day.
Remember laughing till the tea went cold,
Neither of you checking the clock?
No future was invited in,
No promise stood guard at the lock.
Hold love tight and watch it harden,
Fear turns warmth to stone.
Love cannot breathe in possession,
It was never ours to own.
And if our roads should someday part,
Is that the end of the thing?
The river leaves the mountain
Still carrying the spring.
Love is not the end of the road.
It is the walking, light and free,
Without a why, without a map,
And that is all it needs to be.
The rose does not ask to be named.
They give themselves to the morning,
Unbargained for, unclaimed.
But we question love like a stranger at the border:
Where are you headed? How long will you stay?
