There are people you never stopped caring about. You think about them.
You miss them. You want to talk to them. You even tell yourself,
“I should message them today.”
And then somehow, you don't.
One day passes. Then another. Life gets busy, your mind moves on to something else, and before you know it, you've been distant for far longer than you ever meant to be.
The strange part is you never actually wanted to be distant.
You wanted to reply. You wanted to check in. You wanted to stay close. You wanted to be there for them. And you truly meant it.
But somehow, you pulled away. You forgot. You went quiet.
Then comes the guilt.
“If I care about them so much, why can't I show it?”
And it hurts even more when someone asks, “Did you ever care about me?” or says, “It feels like you never cared.”
Maybe the painful part isn't that we don't care.Maybe it's that what we feel inside doesn't always become what we do.
And then, just when you're drowning in guilt and promising yourself to do better, your brain suddenly finds something completely random to focus on. And somehow... you forget about the guilt too.
Until days later, you remember the person, the message, the promise and the whole cycle starts again.
It's almost funny, if it wasn't so painful. Because the truth is, they mattered. You cared. You still do. You just couldn't show it in the way they needed.
