Tonight, I am thinking about
what waits beyond the edges
of everything we know.
About the great unanswered question
that has followed humanity
since the first heart learned
what it meant to love.
What happens when we leave?
Where does the soul go
when the body can no longer carry it?
No one can tell us for certain.
But lately,
I have found comfort
in a softer possibility.
What if we go
where the heart most longs to be?
What if eternity
is not a strange and distant place,
but simply the place
our love has been pointing toward
all along?
Perhaps the soul that dreams of the ocean
awakens beside endless waves.
Perhaps the one who loved the mountains
finds themselves beneath
an endless sky.
And perhaps those
whose greatest treasure
was never a place at all,
but people,
simply find their way home to them.
That thought quiets something in me.
Because perhaps the frightening part of death
has never been dying.
Perhaps it is the thought
of leaving love behind.
Of missing the birthdays.
The laughter.
The ordinary mornings.
The voices we have known
better than our own.
But what if love
does not recognize the distance
between here and whatever comes next?
What if the heart
does not suddenly forget
where it belongs?
Maybe there is no final goodbye.
Maybe there are only different ways
of being near.
A breeze through an open window.
A dream that feels almost too real.
A familiar warmth
arriving for no reason at all.
A quiet feeling
that someone we love
has not gone nearly as far
as we feared.
I cannot know what waits for us.
None of us can.
But tonight,
I choose to believe
that if there is somewhere beyond this life,
love will know the way.
And if I am ever asked
where I want to go,
I will not choose heaven,
or oceans,
or stars.
I will simply say:
Take me wherever
the people I love are.
Because wherever they are,
that will always
feel like home.
