Are You There?

Favoured Frenzy
When someone is consumed by hopelessness,
they do not yearn for miracles.
They yearn for a single soul
to extend a hand through the desolation
a reason to persevere,
when the only thing gazing back
is an interminable abyss.

You search for a glimmer,
not for salvation,
but to ascertain the depth of the darkness;
to know whether its emptiness
is truly infinite.

Perhaps there is a ravine
concealed beneath the void,
or a weathered branch
protruding from fractured stone
something fragile enough to arrest the descent,
if only for a fleeting moment.

For that is the last remnant of hope:
the possibility
that the fall is not yet absolute.

And should there be nothing
no branch,
no light,
no voice reverberating through the silence
then hope relinquishes its final breath.

I do not have to reach out.

Yet I can.

Because the very act of searching
is an admission
that hope has not been extinguished.

So into the vastness I cry,

Is there anyone?

Anything?

Any ember of compassion,
any resonance of humanity,
any providence waiting beyond this obscurity,
to keep me from perishing
within this fathomless abyss?

If you are there,

answer

before the silence convinces me
that it has always been alone.
