Marsh's Last Voice Note
Every night at exactly 10:00 PM, Sweet received a voice note from Marsh.
It was always something simple.
"Did you eat?"
"Don't forget to smile today."
"I'm proud of you, Sweet."
Those thirty-second messages became the happiest part of her day. Even after life had pulled them apart, she never deleted them. Whenever the world felt too heavy, she pressed play and, for a moment, Marsh was with her again.
Then one night...
The voice notes stopped.
She waited.
One day became a week.
A week became a month.
Her messages were never delivered. His phone remained switched off.
Unable to bear the silence, Sweet traveled to Marsh's home.
An elderly man opened the door. The moment he saw her, his eyes filled with tears.
"You must be Sweet."
She nodded, her heart racing.
He placed a small wooden box into her hands. Inside was Marsh's watch, a notebook, and one sealed envelope.
With trembling fingers, she unfolded the letter.
"If you're reading this, my scheduled voice notes have finally ended."
Her breath caught.
"The doctors told me I didn't have much time. I wanted to tell you, but I knew you would never leave my side. You would have given up your dreams just to watch me fight a battle I knew I couldn't win. I loved you too much to let your future end with mine."
Her tears blurred the ink.
"So I recorded months of voice notes before I left. I wanted you to believe I was somewhere out there... living... smiling... because imagining me alive would hurt less than watching me fade away."
A drop of water fell onto the page.
It wasn't rain.
It was her tears.
She played the final recording.
Marsh's weak but familiar voice filled the quiet room.
"Sweet... if you're hearing this, then I finally ran out of tomorrows. Promise me you'll laugh without feeling guilty. Promise me you'll love again without thinking you're betraying me. My love was never meant to become your prison. If you truly loved me... then live the beautiful life I no longer can."
Years passed.
Every evening at exactly 10:00 PM, Sweet sat beneath the same tree where they once dreamed about growing old together.
People thought she was waiting for someone.
They never knew...
She wasn't waiting for Marsh to return.
She was keeping the promise Marsh gave his last tomorrow.
