This is what I woke up to see on the news today... Another death, another case of violence. When people hear about my country only two things come to their minds: Rio and violence. Unfortunately this time there was violence, and it was in Rio.
Marielle Franco was a black, homosexual, human rights figther elected a councilwoman by the people and chosen to lead an investigation on the abusive behaviour of police officers in the Acari neighbourhood. She fought for those who couldn't fight for themselves, she was one of the few honest decent people who actually worked for the sake of the population.
After reporting to the authorities the results of her investigation, who showed the evil ways police in Rio (especifically in Acari) treated the population of mainly black people, she was shot at 5 times alongside her driver, by a mysterious car who stopped right next to hers on the traffic light.
Police says it was an attempt of robery, but we who suffer daily from violence, who have seen how brutal police can be, know that it was not an attempt of robery that went wrong. A black, homosexual activist woman, who faced the police was murdered for uncovering the truth and for being brave enough to stand her ground and fight for those who can't.
Rio police is "working" on the case, but we all know how it will end: no answers and with two innocent lives lost, and a lot more on the way.
