Chapter 26: Ambush

Tara and Dyffros travelled at a calm pace. Tara taking in the sights since it was the first time she’d left home. Elqiana flying above out of sight of the naked eye.

‘I can’t wait to bring you up here with me, little one!’ Elqiana squirmed excitedly.

“Elqiana would like me to fly with her.” Explained Tara to Dyffros.

The elf nodded looking towards the sky. “We need to make you a saddle first, once we have that then you will be able to fly with her.”

“Do you know how to make a saddle for dragons?”

“Master Braiden, he left very precise instructions, since however Zeindaryys and Elqiana have a different build, adjustments will need to be made.”

“Could you tell me about Queen Gabija, please? What is she like? Is she tall? Is she beautiful?”

“So many questions… Queen Gabija, is regal, and fair, and just.”

Tara tried to get more out of the elf about the Elvish Queen, but he wouldn’t answer, it was like talking to a tree.

Twigs snapped and crunched behind the trees at the side of the road. Dyffros sat up looking around, squinting through the trees but couldn’t see anything. He ushered Tara to quicken the pace a little.

A large tree splintered and fell into their path, the horses spooked, reared up and threw the riders to the ground.

“Tell her to stay out of sight, she must not be seen!” Hissed Dyffros.

Tara didn’t hesitate, she relayed the message, Elqiana displaying that she wasn’t happy.

A large group of Humarf’s came from behind a copse of trees sniggering. Dyffros pulled his shimmering gold sword from its sheath, forcing Tara to stay behind.

Three of the enemy ran forward, Dyffros cut them down with a simple thrust and parry. Tara threw a blistering white fireball at a fourth enemy making the enemy evaporate on the spot. A dart flew out from high up from a tree hitting Tara in the neck, she threw a white fireball into the direction of the tree, it exploded on impact, splinters flying everywhere, Dyffros pushed back summoning a shield bubble around them both, several of the enemy fell, impaled by the splinters.

Suddenly Tara collapsed. Dyffros looked behind him to see Tara shaking on the ground, foam coming from her mouth. He glanced around, then lowered his shield. Checking Tara over quickly he noticed the dart in her neck, he pulled it out of and sniffed it, unable to identify what it was. Elqiana roared so loud from high up the ground shook. Dyffros stood up, and looked up to the sky, his distraction cost him, a black arrow with a red feather flew straight at him, hitting him square between the eyes.

“I told you Dyffros, the last time we met that I’d kill you, I always keep to my promises.” Rubian walked out from the shadow of the trees, kicking the elf’s lifeless body as he walked past it to Tara. “And you little madam, are coming with me.”

The air whistled around Rubian, all the oxygen drawn upwards as Elqiana came hurtling downwards at a dangerous speed, Rubian fell backwards stumbling, in the dragons rage a torrent of white ice breath blasted down on the ground freezing everything it touched quickly reaching the now scared Rubian, he managed to stand up and started to run, his arms flailing rapidly as if he was trying to propel himself forward faster. Elqiana’s ice breath caught his flailing hand freezing it instantly, Rubian screamed in severe pain.

Elqiana turned back, flying low she scooped up Tara in front legs and took off back towards Tara’s home.

Elqiana roared, in a desperate plea, She saw Tara’s mother stood by the main road, pulling a donkey on a reign, The dragon flared her wings trying to slow herself down, in bid to protect Tara she folded in her left wing and crashed to the floor tucking her paws and Tara into her stomach.

“Elqiana!!” Tara’s mother rushed forward, and saw her daughter looking lifeless. “HELP, SOMEONE PLEASE Help!”

Elqiana gently placed her friend on the ground, looking up towards the sky and roared as loud as she could in frustration. The townsfolk crowded round, as the town healer pushed through. A tabby coloured werecat by her side. The mere-cat slowly walked forward, sniffing the foam at Tara’s mouth, “powerful sleep induced coma.”

The town healer ushered some people to put Tara on a makeshift stretcher to carry her inside.

Tara’s mother put her hand on Elqiana’s side. “Please o’fair dragon, tell me what happened?”

‘Ambush, tree fell, small humans attacked, fights happened, many fell, dart hit Tara in neck. Red eye man killed Dyffros’

“A man with red eyes is responsible for this?”

Suddenly the werecat hissed and spat at the floor. “Rubian Blackthorn, vile!”
