Pfizer announced positive early results from its coronavirus vaccine trial, cementing the lead in a frenzied global race that has unfolded at record-breaking speed.

The drug maker Pfizer announced on Monday that an early analysis of its coronavirus vaccine trial suggested the vaccine was robustly effective in preventing Covid-19, a promising development as the world has waited anxiously for any positive news about a pandemic that has killed more than 1.2 million people.

Pfizer, which developed the vaccine with the German drugmaker BioNTech, released only sparse details from its clinical trial, based on the first formal review of the data by an outside panel of experts.

The company said that the analysis found that the vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in preventing the disease among trial volunteers who had no evidence of prior coronavirus infection. If the results hold up, that level of protection would put it on par with highly effective childhood vaccines for diseases such as measles. No serious safety concerns have been observed, the company said.

Pfizer plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration for emergency authorization of the two-dose vaccine later this month, after it has collected the recommended two months of safety data. By the end of the year it will have manufactured enough doses to immunize 15 million to 20 million people, company executives have said.

“This is a historical moment,” said Kathrin Jansen, a senior vice president and the head of vaccine research and development at Pfizer. “This was a devastating situation, a pandemic, and we have embarked on a path and a goal that nobody ever has achieved — to come up with a vaccine within a year.”

The news comes just days after Joseph R. Biden Jr. clinched a victory over President Trump in the presidential election. Mr. Trump had repeatedly hinted a vaccine would be ready before Election Day, Nov. 3.

PUBG Mobile coming back to India: Here’s everything you need to know

PUBG Corporation has announced that it is preparing to launch PUBG Mobile India, a new game specially made for the Indian market. This will be a fork game of PUBG Mobile, which was banned earlier this year in India by the government. Alongside the announcement, the company has revealed its plans on how it will provide a secure and healthy gameplay environment for players, and how it will invest in the country to cultivate local video game, Esports, entertainment, and IT industries.

The company is yet to announce the release date of PUBG Mobile India. However, we expect the game to be made available very soon.

PUBG has stated that it plans to create an Indian subsidiary, which will help in communication with players and provide them with localised services. It intends to hire over 100 employees that will specialise in business, esports and game development. It will also work with local businesses to strengthen its gaming service. For this, Krafton Inc plans to invest around $100 million in the country.

It will also be hosting India-exclusive esports events featuring big prize pools, big tournaments and big productions.

PUBG Mobile India will have privacy and security of Indian players data as its top priority, according to the company. It will conduct regular audits and verifications on the storage systems holding Indian users personally identifiable information to reinforce security.

The in-game content will be tailored to reflect local needs, specially customised for Indian gamers. The game will now be set in a virtual simulation training ground, new characters automatically starting clothed, and green hit effects to reflect the virtual nature of the game. It will also include a feature that places restrictions on game time to promote healthy gameplay habits for younger players.

To recall, PUBG Mobile was banned in India on September 2, under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The reason behind the ban was that the app has been engaging in activities that are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity, defence and security of the country.

As of now, the game is no more available on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. And even if you manage to get hold of the latest APK, the game does not play, due to the servers being turned off for the country.

After Tencent Games was not able to suffice with the Indian laws and was unable to bring the game back to India, PUBG Corporation announced that it will be revoking distribution rights for the game in India from Tencent. And that it itself will take the helm and help guide the game back into the Indian market.

India is just one of the many countries that have banned the battle royale game. Other countries where the game is banned include China, Jordan, Nepal, Israel and Iraq. Many other countries have plans to ban the game in the near future, according to various reports. The reasons for the bans seem to be similar to that of India.

Within a week, the second cyclone is taking shape in the North Indian Ocean region. The Bay of Bengal will see its second Severe Cyclone of the year, after Super Cyclone Amphan formed in May. It is likely to hit Tamil Nadu coast by midweek. The next three days shall see extremely heavy rain, strong winds along with highly rough sea conditions.

Why are Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on ‘red’ alert?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the development of a cyclone in the Southwest region of the Bay of Bengal, off Tamil Nadu coast. After cyclone Gaja in 2018, this will be the second cyclone to cross Tamil Nadu in the last two years.

As of 11.30 am on Monday, it remained as a depression located at about 560km southeast of Chennai.

The Met department has said that it will strengthen into a cyclone. Once intensified, it would acquire its name ‘Nivar’, proposed by Iran.

When will the cyclone develop, what would be its intensity?

The depression will intensify into a cyclone sometime on Tuesday. At this stage, the wind speed will range between 70 to 80 km/ hr gusting to 90km/ hr.

The cyclone will further gain strength into a Severe Cyclone category (90 to 100 km/hr gusting to 110 km/hr) by Wednesday.

“It is expected to hit Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday afternoon. The projected track indicates its landwards crossing between Karaikal and Mamallapuram near Puducherry as a severe cyclonic storm (100 to 110 km/ hr gusting to 120 km/hr),” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, IMD.

What adverse weather can this cyclone cause for the east coast?

The maximum hazard due to this cyclone will be caused to Tamil Nadu. Extreme weather, here, would occur both on Tuesday and Wednesday. In association with development of the severe cyclonic storm, sea conditions in the west-southwest regions of the Bay of Bengal have turned rough to extremely rough and remain at its most unfavourable condition on Wednesday.

With extremely heavy rain — of the order of 20cm or more, forecast on Wednesday, the IMD has placed Tamil Nadu under ‘red’ (take action) alert. Northern districts, here, could experience rainfall more than 24 cm on the day.

Heavy rain (64 to 115mm) is also forecast over Rayalaseema, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and south interior Karnataka during November 24-26.

Southern Chhattisgarh and Odisha, too, will come under the influence of the cyclone with some rainfall activity likely on November 26 and 27.

Since Monday, squally winds prevailed in the sea and it is set to gain momentum during the next three days.

On Tuesday, winds with speeds 65 to 75 km/hr gusting to 85 km/hr would prevail off Tamil Nadu coast. As the cyclone would inch closer to the coast and enter the ‘severe’ category, winds with speeds 100 to 110 km/ hr gusting to 120 km/hr is forecast over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Such strong winds are expected for at least 12 hours on Wednesday.

At the time of the cyclone crossing over to the land, storm surge with tidal waves up to one metre in height above the astronomical tide, is expected. This could lead to inundation of low-lying areas. Most of the storm surge would be experienced along the coastal areas between Puducherry and Chennai.

On Wednesday, the sea condition would be high to very highly unfavourable, triggering sea waves up to 10 metres high.

“It is very dangerous for fishermen, sailing ships and also sea ports,” said Mohapatra.

Which areas will be affected by the cyclone?

Northern districts of Tamil Nadu will face the maximum hazard. On Tuesday, heavy rain is predicted for Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Perambu. On the day of cyclone crossing the land, districts like Puducherry, Kallakurchi, Kadalur, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu and Karaikal could record extremely heavy rain.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Nellore and Chittoor districts of Rayalaseema, Telangana, south interior Karnataka will also receive rainfall due to this cyclone between November 24 – 26.

What damage is expected in Tamil Nadu?

The IMD has suggested complete suspension of fishing activity in the west-southwest regions of the Bay of Bengal till November 25. Fishermen have been advised to not venture into the sea during the next three days.

Temporary houses and huts could suffer damage. Power and communication lines, trees could be uprooted. Standing crops could be hit due to the saline water carried landwards by the cyclone.

Cyclone Nivar, which will likely become a "very severe cyclonic storm", is expected to make landfall Wednesday evening between Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu (which is around 56 km from state capital Chennai) and Karaikal in Puducherry.

Nivar will bring extremely heavy rainfall and winds between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has advised, adding that coastal areas could receive heavy rains till Thursday. This morning Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to assure the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments - both have said tomorrow is a public holiday - of all possible support.

Around 1,200 National Disaster Response Force personnel have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh as well, NDRF chief SN Pradhan told PTI. 12 teams are in Tamil Nadu (six in Cuddalore district and two in Chennai), seven in Andhra Pradesh and three in Puducherry. An additional 20 teams will be on standby in Odisha's Cuttack, Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh and Thrissur in Kerala.

Kerala is on high alert as Burevi inches closer to its shores, with the cyclonic storm expected to cross Thiruvananthapuram by Friday and affect seven districts over 72 hours starting today.

Apart from the state capital, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki, and Ernakulam will likely be in Cyclone Burevi's line of fire, the IMD said, as it issued a red alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha.

The storm is expected to first pound Sri Lanka's northern coast, bringing with it heavy rains and winds up to 90 km per hour. It is likely to weaken by the time it crosses the Gulf of Mannar and turns back to hit Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu, but will still be powerful.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Wednesday morning to offer central government support. "We have discussed matters related to the cyclone with Prime Minister Modi. We have explained steps taken by the state government," the Chief Minister said.

Mr Vijayan said that by Wednesday evening close to 2,500 relief camps had been identified and nearly 700 people were already relocated. He also said fishermen had told not to venture out to sea till Saturday, and that residents had been advised to not leave home unless it is an emergency.

"Eight teams of the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) have reached the state. Air Force facilities have been arranged at Sulur base in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore. The Navy is also ready," the Chief Minister said as he outlined measures being taken.

"A State executive meeting, chaired by the Chief Secretary, has met and assessed the situation," he added, reassuring Kerala residents "there is no need to worry".

Mr Vijayan also confirmed that travel restrictions may be imposed in Pathanamthitta district - one of seven expected to receive heavy rainfall - for people going on pilgrimage to Sabarimala.

District disaster management authorities will take the necessary action, he said.

The Chief Minister also said that water levels in the Neyyar, Kalada and Kalki dams would be reduced to prevent flooding. At present, the Neyyar, Aruvikkara, Kalada, Malankara, Shiruvani, Kanjirapuzha and Pothundi dams have been opened.

Meanwhile, parts of Tamil Nadu are also likely to receive heavy rainfall; Burevi is expected to make first contact with the Indian coast somewhere between Pamban and Kanyakumari.

Around 360 people have been evacuated from the Pamban area already, with relief camps set up in the Ramanathapuram and Kanyakumari districts and 18 NDRF teams deployed in the southern parts of the state. A team is on standby in Puducherry as well.

Worryingly though, 161 fishermen's boats have yet to return to their villages in Kanyakumari.

Tamil Nadu is still recovering from the impact of Cyclone Nivar, which hit just days ago.

Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar recorded 97.60 millimetres of rainfall since Wednesday night, with Kariapatti receiving maximum rain of 15.80 mm ahead of cyclone Burevi's landfall in the state.

Rains recorded in other regions of the district since Wednesday night are as follows: Aruppukottai (13 mm), Sivakasi (12.50 mm), Kovilankulam (12.40 mm), Virudhunagar (9.50 mm), Tiruchuli (9 mm), Vembakottai (7.40 mm), Sattur (6 mm), Rajapalayam (5 mm), Srivilliputhur (3 mm), Watrap (2.60 mm) and Pilavakkal (1.40 mm).

The average rainfall received is 8.13 mm. No damages have been reported so far.

District Monitoring Officer S Madhumitha conducted a field visit on Wednesday to inspect some of the reservoirs and kanmois, ahead of the impending cyclone.

She stated that several precautionary measures are being undertaken as the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region.

"Nine low lying areas have been identified and 15 centers have been made ready to relocate people from flood-prone zones. Ten teams of officials have been formed to monitor the situation, and another 10 disaster relief teams have also been formed. Further, around 911 members - including 56 fire and rescue services personal, 545 swimmers, 209 persons to remove fallen trees, debris (if any) are on the ready," she added. Further, 1,860 first responders are also on the ready in rural areas.

Five of the eight reservoirs have neared their maximum capacity - Vembakottai (83.5 m/ 87.5 m), Golwarpatti (57.4 m/ 62.5 m), Anaikuttam (91.2 m/ 95 m), Kullur Sandhai (29.3 m/ 30.2 m) and Sastha Koil (99.6 m/ 103.4 m). While Periyar has 197 m against 204.5 m, Kovilar dam has 206m against 212 m and Irukkankudi (48.5 m/ 54.85 m).

She also said that 55 of the 342 kanmois under the PWD and 33 of the 720 kanmois under department of Rural Development, are filled to its capacity.

In case of emergency, people can contact 1077 or 04562-252017, which will be functional round the clock, she added.

chennai started raining today morning and drizzled yesterday but people neglects buying propert based on landscape & complain about floods. gov must stop providing power & water connection in illegal & low lying locations, so no one can buy. how they gives power and water connection to illegal lands still i don’t know & how law allows it, is a surprise in our country

He got encouraged and more numbers coming than before with big big paragraphs now.30 days challenge fails :Laugh1:
