Back in 2020 we wrote about sextortion scams<\/a>, and the advice then was simple: never send an intimate photo or video to a stranger, and the scammer has nothing to hold over you.<\/p>\n

That advice is still good. But it is no longer enough.<\/p>\n

“In 2026, a scammer does not need anything intimate from you. A normal profile picture, a screenshot from an adult chat<\/a> session, a selfie from your Instagram, even a photo someone else tagged you in \u2014 any of these is enough raw material for AI to generate a fake nude or a fake video of “you” in under a minute. The threat has changed, and the way you respond has to change with it.<\/p>\n

It started with actresses. It won’t stop there.<\/h3>\n

If you want proof of how easy this has become, look at who got hit first: actresses, singers and streamers.<\/p>\n

Over the past three years, women in the public eye across Hollywood, K-pop, Bollywood and the streaming world have been targeted again and again. A clip from a red-carpet interview, a music video, a gym reel, a lift selfie ordinary footage that was never remotely sexual gets fed into a face-swap model and comes out the other side as a nude photo or an explicit video that looks, at a glance, completely real. Within hours it is on Telegram channels, adult sites and forum threads with the actress’s name attached, and no amount of “this is fake” can outrun it.<\/p>\n

The damage is not theoretical. These women have had to issue public statements denying videos they never made, field questions from family and colleagues, watch brand deals go quiet, and in some cases go to court just to get a platform to act. In early 2024, explicit fakes of one of the world’s biggest pop stars spread so fast on X that the platform temporarily blocked searches for her name and that was the moment governments from Washington to Brussels to Seoul started writing deepfake laws in earnest. Since then the tools have only got cheaper and the fakes only got better.<\/p>\n

Here is the part that matters for you: celebrities were targeted first because they have thousands of high-quality photos and videos online. But the same models now work from a single photo. Cybercrime agencies in several countries report that most deepfake complaints today come from ordinary people, not celebrities, students, working professionals, people who simply posted a profile picture. An actress has a PR team and a lawyer. Most of the people reading this don’t, which is exactly why scammers have moved down the ladder.<\/p>\n

How the scam works now<\/h3>\n

The pattern is the same old sextortion play with an AI upgrade:<\/p>\n

1. The approach<\/strong>. Someone friendly starts a conversation in a chat room<\/a>, on WhatsApp, on Instagram, sometimes on a dating app. They are warm, quick to flirt, and quick to move you to a private channel. In chat rooms they often ask for a cam session “just to see your face.”<\/p>\n

2. The harvest<\/strong>. They only need a clear image of your face. A cam screenshot, a profile photo, or a photo you sent while chatting is enough. Some don’t even bother chatting; they scrape photos straight from public social media profiles.<\/p>\n

3. The fake<\/strong>. Free apps and open-source AI models can now swap a face into intimate photos or video with realistic lighting, skin and movement. To your family, your boss or a stranger scrolling past, it looks real.<\/p>\n

4. The threat.<\/strong> You get a message: “I have your video.” Attached is the fake, plus a screenshot of your friends list, your workplace, or your family members. A countdown starts pay within 24 hours, sometimes within the hour, or it goes to everyone.<\/p>\n

5. The payment demand.<\/strong> Usually crypto, gift cards, PayPal or a local instant-payment app. The amounts start “small” (a few hundred dollars) because scammers know a small first payment is easier to extract.<\/p>\n

The whole operation is often run by organized groups working from scripts, targeting hundreds of people at a time. You are not being singled out. You are one row in a spreadsheet.<\/p>\n

Why paying never ends it<\/h3>\n

This is the single most important thing to understand: paying does not make the problem go away. It makes you a confirmed target.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once you pay, the scammer knows three things about you: you have money, you are scared, and you will act on threats. The next message comes a day later asking for more. Then more. People have paid five, ten, fifteen times before finally stopping \u2014 and the images were still never “deleted,” because there is nothing to delete. The scammer can generate another one in a minute.<\/p>\n

Scammers rarely follow through on the threat to send the images, because doing so ends their leverage. Their business model is fear, not distribution. The people who lose the least are the ones who refuse from the start.<\/p>\n

What to do if it happens to you<\/p>\n

Take a breath. Then follow these steps in order.<\/p>\n

Do not pay. Do not negotiate. Do not send anything else.<\/strong> Every reply, even an angry one, tells them the line is live.<\/p>\n

Think of it the way the United States has handled hostage-takers for fifty years. Since the 1970s, official US policy has been “no concessions to terrorists” the logic being that every ransom paid buys the next kidnapping. Reagan repeated it publicly during the 1985 TWA hijacking, and when his own administration quietly broke the rule by trading arms for hostages in Lebanon, the result was exactly what the policy predicted: more Americans were seized. The scammer holding a fake image of you runs on the same maths. Pay once and you’ve told them, and everyone they share lists with, that this number pays.<\/p>\n

Do not delete anything. Screenshot the profile, the messages, the payment demand, the fake image, and any phone numbers, usernames or wallet addresses. Note dates and times. This is your evidence.<\/p>\n

Block, but only after screenshotting.<\/strong> Cut off the channel so the pressure stops. If they reach you through a new account, screenshot that too and block again.<\/p>\n

Report it.<\/h4>\n

To the platform:<\/strong> report the account wherever the contact happened (WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, the chat site). Most major platforms now have a dedicated option for intimate-image abuse and are legally required in the US, UK and EU to act on it quickly.<\/p>\n

To the police:<\/strong> in the US, file at ic3.gov (the FBI’s cybercrime portal); in the UK, use the Revenge Porn Helpline; in Australia, eSafety; in India, cybercrime.gov.in or helpline 1930. Most countries now treat non-consensual deepfakes as a crime, so a formal report carries weight.<\/p>\n

In Chatzozo:<\/strong> report the username to a moderator immediately. Sextortion attempts get a permanent ban, and reports help us catch the next attempt on someone else.<\/p>\n

Hash the image.<\/strong> StopNCII.org lets you create a digital fingerprint of the real or fake image from your own device the image itself never leaves your phone and participating platforms use that fingerprint to block it from being uploaded. It works for AI-generated fakes too.<\/p>\n

Tell someone. Scammers rely on isolation. Telling one trusted person breaks the spell and usually makes the countdown feel a lot less real.<\/p>\n

How to make yourself a harder target<\/h3>\n

You can’t remove every photo of yourself from the internet, and you shouldn’t have to live like a hermit. But a few habits close most of the doors:<\/p>\n

Keep your face off cam with strangers until you actually trust them<\/strong>. A cam screenshot is the most common seed image for chat-room sextortion.
\nLock down social profiles<\/strong>. Private Instagram, no public friend lists, no workplace on a public profile. Scammers use your friend list as the threat, not just your photo.
\nDon’t move to WhatsApp, Telegram or Snapchat quickly.<\/strong> Your phone number is a permanent identifier. An anonymous chat room username is not.
\nBe suspicious of speed<\/strong>. Real people take time. Someone who flirts hard in the first five minutes and pushes for cam or a number is running a script.

If you know someone going through this<\/h3>\n

Don’t judge, and don’t say “why did you send photos” in 2026 they may not have sent anything at all. Help them screenshot, help them file the report, and sit with them through the countdown. The clock the scammer set almost always runs out with nothing happening.<\/p>\n
